Driving a Materials Revolution in Separation Science

NCCR “Separations” develops next-generation separation technologies to tackle major global challenges, from climate change and energy use to pollution, waste management and resource recovery. By combining materials design with process modelling, cost analysis and environmental assessment, the consortium aims to create solutions that are both sustainable and economically viable.

Its research focuses on three key areas: CO₂ capture from air, high-temperature ammonia separation, and recovery of critical metals such as lithium and cobalt from waste streams. Bringing together 18 research groups across disciplines, NCCR “Separations” seeks to accelerate technology transfer to industry, support Switzerland’s sustainability goals and strengthen innovation. The NCCR will start the 1st of May 2026.
